August Newsletter

August signals the end of the winter months and begins the run down to the end of the year. Most of us feel a little better as we look forward to the beginning of spring in September. Since our last report a number of exciting things have happened that will assist us to finish the year in a good shape.

As a faith mission we depend on a variety of people continuing to support us.

Both the City of Casey and The City of Greater Dandenong through their community grants have indicated financial assistance in 2002/3 funding period. This will be used to meet the cost of food for our various meal programs. Funding from the Andrews foundation has carried us to this point of time in 2002. Two factors have caused us concern in 2002. The first is the continual growth in the community for assistance with numbers averaging 90 people per meal.

The largest attendance was on a Wednesday when 126 people were fed. The second is the 20% increase in the cost of food. We are told that there is no GST on food but this has not stopped the rises in all the basic items of food we provide at the Drop in. However, despite the prediction in 1992 that Cornerstone would survive 6 months if they are lucky! we are now well into our 10th year. Apart from the groups already mentioned there are a multitude of people in the community that respond to the needs of Cornerstone by sending in small amounts of money and providing food etc. A new donor this month is the Dandenong business, PACK&SEND in Walker St. who are supporting Cornerstone with a monthly donation of $150. They join groups such as the Lions Club etc who are willing to commit themselves to assisting those in need in the district.

Ps. Max Walker. CEO.

Encounters:
An Encounter is to be held on Sunday August 4th from 5 - 9.00 p.m. and will feature a BBQ cooked by David and Felix. There will be skits, Phil, Ray and Ian will sing, Barb and Wilma will run a quiz and 'Sister Act.' will be screened. Once again ERMHA have allowed us to use the community bus.

Fax Machine from Centerlink:
Centerlink Dandenong has donated to Cornerstone a Fax machine and this is currently being installed.

MIDDWAY:
Ps. Max represents Cornerstone and plans are underway for a Community Walk in October culminating in a festival at the Dandenong Park.

Christmas in July:
Ian and Helen, David and Charlie were thrilled when over 60 people attended this recent Saturday Night meeting. People brought food allowing for a magnificant supper. It was a real fun night.

Pool Competition:
Saturday Night leader, Paul Briscoe is pleased with the response to the competition and hopes to see it concluded in the next couple of weeks. Names of the winners will be engraved on the Steve Chapman Memorial Trophy.

Board of Management Ponderings:
At its last meeting the Board of Management set the main dates for activities for the second half of the year. Over the first couple of weeks of August several Board members will be away from Cornerstone. Pastor David and Patricia Grice from 13th - 20th, Barbara Siddall from August 8 for 10 days, and Marion Jones on Fridays 9 and 16th. Due to the antiquated state of the hotwater service Cornerstone is investigating ways to up grade the system.

Although we appreciated the waterfall in the Op Shop we were glad when we were able to have the roof fixed. It cost nearly $800 and as all our funds are tied up in providing food this places a unexpected burden on the budget. If someone feels called to assist with this cost please give the office a ring. The Board has also decided to throw out some of the old furniture as it was well past its useby date and gradually these will be replaced with extra tables and plastic chairs to cater for the increasing number of peopled attending programs.

Driver Awareness:
This program has hired Cornerstone during 2002 for a series of programs dealing with driving offences and these have been going well.

Photographic Exhibition for Sister City in China:
Pastor David and Patricia Grice represented Cornerstone at a function at the City Offices recently and had the opportunity to meet a cross-section of people representing a variety of community groups.

Dandenong Pyschiatric Hospital Program:
Ps David Grice does pastoral care at the hospital each Monday and runs a gospel service as part of the program. He visits the wards and follows up on Cornerstone folk in the hospital. He is a valuable liasion between Cornerstone and the Hospital. Clients from the hospital and the Doveton Community Care Units are welcome attenders at many of Cornerstone's programs.
