Editorial: At a breakfast run by CHIPS (Christians Helping in Primary Schools) I had the privilege of being both entertained and inspired by a vibrant 21 year old, Nick Vujicic. Nick was born with no arms, no legs and just a stumpy foot which is not even developed enough to kick a ball, yet he has a permanent smile on his face. Despite his physical limitations he has completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Planning and investments. Nick, a motivational speaker, travels the country enthusing people to see beyond their limitations to grasp the possibilities that are available to us. Here was a young man greatly disabled who filled us all with awe of his achievements. He was entertaining and made us laugh. He also challenged us all to realise the limitations we personally face were miniscule compared to those Nick daily had to overcome. He was a timely encouragement to us all. Pastor Max Walker. CEO Cornerstone. National Day of Thanksgiving: Cornerstone received an invitation to attend both the Greater Dandenong and Casey Day of Thanksgiving Breakfasts. Don and Jo Cameron represented us at the Dandenong breakfast while Pastor Max and Alison Walker, David Munro, Amanda Hensman, Barbara Siddall, and Gwen North attended the Casey function. The purpose of the breakfasts which were held all over the country was to say thank you to those who act as volunteers in the local community. Cornerstone Display at Dandenong Church of Christ: Cornerstone was invited to be part of a Missions Display and Ps. Max and Alison manned the display after the church service giving out brochures and newsletters as well as answering questions on the activities that happen at Cornerstone. Cornerstone was invited to leave the display up for the following Sunday as well. News from the Philippines: Cornerstone continues to support two programs in the Philippines. The radio program run by Pastor Quitoriano continues to provide a weekly christain broadcast on Southern Mindinao. The church program run by Pastor Rene and Richelle continues to support an orphanage and Cornerstone assists with the provision of food and educational support for the orphans. They have also established a number of churches at Manukan. June Encounter: Despite one of the wettest and coldest Sunday evenings of the year up to 50 people gathered for the June Encounter on Sunday 21st. However, the meal and the warm friendship of Cornerstone easily compensated for the bleakness of the night. A feature of the night was Johno the Music Man and his team of puppets. Their 45 minute presentation was a highlight of the evening. After the meal the Drop In remained open until 8.45 p.m. and the people enjoyed the normal Drop In activities. Gospel Hour: With Pastor Max and Alison Walker and and Ps. David Grice leading the Gospel Hour continues to be a special time on a Thursday night from 7 - 8.00 p.m. on a Thursday. Videos, choruses, stories and short , relevant scripture talks are a great introduction to the Thursday evening Drop In. Donation for Heater: Cornerstone has just received a donation to cover the cost of a heater for the main Drop In area. Currently the Board is investigating the provision of a second heater. Another microwave oven was recently donated. Appreciation Awards: These have recently sent to our major donors thanking them for their continued support. Pool Competition: Under the supervision of JIMBO, our pool supervisor the battle for the ?teve Chapman Memorial Pool Trophy? has been brought to a successful conclusion being won by Joe Brennan whose name will now be added to the trophy. The winner also received a $30 Coles voucher. Suicide Conference: Amanda Hensman attended this conference as a delegate from Cornerstone. Conferences such as this allow us to widen the experiences of our volunteers. Call to Action: Youth Mental Health: A public forum will be held on Tuesday 29th from 6.30 - 8.30 p.m. at the Melbourne Town Hall to generate real responses to the hidden epidemic of youth mental health problems in Australia. So far the response to this crisis has been totally inadequate. If someone in your family or someone you know becomes unwell they will probably not receive treatment. 1 in 4 young people are affected. In Victoria alone this represents 160,000 young Victorian who are unlikely to receive adequate treatment. In all areas of mental health funding needs to be increased. Southern Sudanese Forum: Pastor Max and Alison attended this excellent information session run by The South Eastern Migrant Resource Centre. Leaders of the Sudanese community spoke including representatives from the Nuer, Chollo and Dinka tribes. Southern Sudanese migrants are one of the latest groups to move into the Dandenong area. Last Resort Band This is a group of clients from Southern Region Mental Health Association and is one of their daytime activity programs. They have been invited to share their music with us following a Wednesday lunch. They will play for approximately an hour on Wednesday July 7th in the Cornerstone Drop In Centre. Final Special Youth Night: This will be held at Cornerstone on Saturday Night. This is the third program especially geared to young people between the ages of 13 - 18. From July the fourth Saturday night will be run as a normal drop in program by a team from Vineyard Church. The Youth program will be evaluated at the July Board Meeting to see if the program will be repeated at a later date. Football Scarf Display: As part of the football season celebrations Cornerstone is displaying football scarves on the back wall. Currently we have Hawks, Saints, Tigers, Bombers , Lions scarves donated. Scarves from other clubs would be appreciated. July Board: At this meeting the Board will review the year as it has unfolded and set goals for the rest of 2004. Maree Arthur a member of Dandenong Lions Club will also attend the meeting. Maree will be reporting regularly to the Lions on the needs of Cornerstone etc. How you can Help? On of the major needs Cornerstone has year round is for coffee. Long life milk cartons are another need. Also during the cold winter months soup is provided at all meetings and cans of soup assist us greatly. All these items can be left at Cornerstone on Wednesday and Friday mornings up to 1.00 p.m. and on a Monday afternoon between 1.00 - 3.00 p.m. Monday Pool: The time has been extended.
