PASTORDON CAMERON REPORTS

img01The past month has probably been the busiest of the year for me. Funding arrived from the 'Sisters of Mercy' to do more work with Fatherless boys and I'm planning activities with otherBoys Brigade leaders as quickly as possible to get things underway.

'Youth Dimension' called saying they had a large number of interns (trainee youth workers) and want to release them into four Dandenong schools in 2007. I've received very positive feedback from schools and more meetings and discussions will follow in the next month.

The City of Greater Dandenong 'Young Peoples Involvement Project' has sponsored our drug education in schools program for the last few years and looks like having even more money available next year for thispurpose and they expect to ask for submissions in November.

I continue to mentor several Fatherless boys once a week and I'm constantly being approached to do more of this but don't have the time (so we need more men interested in helping out with this).

I'm talking with other Church groups about more Cornerstone programs next year (possibly a Sunday morning Drop-in or late Friday night Youth Drop-In) and that is progressing well.

I'm looking forward to Melbourne Cup Day when we'll have a digital projector to show the Melbourne Cup on the large white Cornerstone screen. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, ideas or projects you think I could help out with.

MARANATHA!

Hundreds of starfish were stranded on the beach and a little boy was busily throwing them back into the water. An observing adult remarked to him, "Most of them will be dead by the time you get to them, what difference will it make!" The boy paused for a moment before replying. "It sure makes a difference to the ones I can throw back!"

There are many people in our society that find themselves stranded through misfortune, abuse, violence and poverty. At that particular moment in their life's journey they are often helpless and lost. For them it is a pivotal time! For some they will sink even deeper into depression and despair. Some will add to the suicide statistics. But for some their will be someone who comes beside them and gives them a helping hand and that will be the catalyst for survival and change.

Real life mirrors the day when Jesus healed 10 lepers and only one came back to say "thanks!" For those of us at Cornerstone it is enough to see a smile return to a lined face of a mother trying to find food for her child, the look in the eyes of a person down in their luck when they realize that someone does care about them, the excitement when someone returns to tell us that at last they have a job.

Just as the individual starfish appreciated the opportunity of a second chance this opportunity should be available to all who are disadvantaged in our society and we are the only ones that can give them another opportunity.

Most of our society is isolated from the poor and when confronted by it we tend to throw money in an attempt to solve the problem. Money is needed but also the impact of a caring person is a powerful life changing agent. Jesus demonstrated this principle over and over. He was the friend of sinners. He visited the home of Simon the Leper (an outcast), shared his sandwiches with a rag tag group of people who walked the countryside, was a friend to the despised tax collectors and publicans. He threw a lifeline to so many. In some small way we can do the same.
